Philadelphia Plastic Surgeon Uses Fat Transfer to Enhance Breast Reconstruction Outcomes

Dr. Louis Bucky utilizes large and small-volume fat transfer to help breast reconstruction patients achieve the most natural look and feel for their breasts.

Philadelphia, PA — “Be it large or small volume, I employ some degree of fat transfer for 100% of the breast reconstruction procedures I perform at my practice,” writes Philadelphia plastic surgeon Louis Bucky, MD in a recent blog post titled How is Fat Obtained for Breast Reconstruction with Fat Transfer? According to his website, Dr. Bucky utilizes the innovative fat transfer technique to relocate fat in an effort to help fill out and enhance reconstructed breasts for a more natural look and feel.

In the aforementioned post, the Philadelphia plastic surgeon reveals that liposuction is his procedure of choice for the extraction of fat cells. He says donor sites initially targeted are areas of the body where an excess amount of fat buildup is present; most commonly the hips and stomach regions. If patients do not have a particular area with substantial fat accumulation, Dr. Bucky notes that the volume needed for transfer can be obtained by removing small amounts of fat from multiple areas of the body in order to ensure no one area is “over-harvested” and left with noticeable irregularities.

For breast reconstruction patients without sufficient skin and breast tissue, Dr. Bucky will typically use a presurgical tissue-expansion system called BRAVA®, prior to injecting large volumes of fat into the breasts. Designed to fit overtop the breasts, the BRAVA® device applies mild external suction in order to gradually stimulate both skin and tissue expansion. According to Benefits of BRAVA® Prior to Breast Reconstruction – another recent blog post on Dr. Bucky’s website – two distinct benefits of employing BRAVA® prior to breast reconstruction with fat transfer are:

  1. “The BRAVA® device facilitates an increase of blood supply and various growth factors within the breasts, often enabling the recipient site to accommodate newly-transferred fat more reliably.”
  2. “The BRAVA® device enables larger quantities of fat to be transferred, typically resulting in greater volume and fullness for the breasts.”

Ultimately, whether breast implants are utilized or not, Dr. Bucky says fat transfer for breast reconstruction patients can help yield the most aesthetically-pleasing, natural-looking results.
