How Do Neuromodulators Work?

Neuromodulators such as BOTOX® Cosmetic is an effective treatment for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by using small doses of botulinum toxin injected into targeted facial muscles. Neuromodulators work by blocking the nerve signals for muscle contractions that create facial expressions. This temporarily relaxes the targeted muscles and smooths the skin.1 As a result, the skin appears more youthful and rejuvenated. This treatment is especially popular for addressing common dynamic wrinkles and facial lines such as crow’s feet and frown lines. Beyond its cosmetic uses, neuromodulators also have medical applications, such as alleviating muscle spasms and severe underarm sweating (hyperhidrosis).

BOTOX® Alternatives

Daxxify®

Daxxify® is a groundbreaking long-acting neuromodulator containing botulinum toxin type A. This innovative treatment sets itself apart by offering extended results that can last up to six months, significantly longer than traditional neuromodulators.2 It’s the only frown line treatment powered by a novel peptide. Daxxify effectively targets facial wrinkles, delivering a smoother skin texture and more youthful appearance. The advanced formulation is designed to provide consistent and reliable results, making it an appealing option for those looking to maintain their youthful look with fewer treatments throughout the year. Daxxify is ideal for treating common problem areas such as frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead wrinkles, ensuring a comprehensive approach to facial rejuvenation.

Dysport®

Dysport is a botulinum toxin injectable known for its ability to diffuse more readily, making it particularly effective for targeting larger areas of the face. It has the fastest onset of effects among neuromodulators, with patients often seeing the first signs of smoother skin as soon as 24 hours after treatment. Dysport is ideal for reducing moderate to severe glabellar lines, commonly known as frown lines or “elevens,” and is also used off-label for crow’s feet and smile lines. Clinical studies have shown a high satisfaction rate of 97% among Dysport patients.3 However, it’s important to note that Dysport contains lactose and cow’s milk proteins, which may not be suitable for all patients.

Jeuveau®

Jeuveau is a cutting-edge neuromodulator known for its precision and early onset, with patients seeing results in as little as 3-5 days. Similar to BOTOX and Dysport, Jeuveau uses botulinum toxin to smooth wrinkles, but it stands out due to its unique purification process. This new treatment, often referred to as “Newtox,” has garnered attention and excitement among patients. Clinical studies have shown that Jeuveau effectively improves the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines.4 Additionally, it can be used off-label to address crow’s feet and other fine lines around the mouth, jawline, eyes, and forehead.

Xeomin®

Xeomin is a unique BOTOX alternative that stands out due to its formulation, which lacks unnecessary protein additives and preservatives. Often referred to as “the naked injectable,” Xeomin contains only the active ingredient, botulinum toxin type A. This purified formula can be particularly effective for patients who have developed resistance to other neuromodulators or have experienced immune reactions to added proteins. Xeomin® works by temporarily relaxing facial wrinkles through blocking neuromuscular signals to the targeted muscles. While it has a longer onset time of five to seven days for the full effect, Xeomin® is highly effective in treating moderate to severe frown lines, also known as “elevens”.

Preparing for Neuromodulators

Preparing for neuromodulator treatments involves a few key steps to ensure a safe and successful procedure. First, schedule a consultation to discuss your goals and concerns, allowing the practitioner to determine if neuromodulator treatments are the right treatment for you. During this appointment, it’s essential to disclose your medical history and any medications you are taking to avoid potential complications. In the days leading up to your treatment, refrain from consuming alcohol and blood-thinning medications to minimize the risk of bruising. Additionally, follow any specific pre-procedure instructions provided by your practitioner, such as avoiding strenuous exercise on the day of treatment. By adhering to these guidelines, you can enhance the overall safety and effectiveness of your neuromodulator treatments.

The Neuromodulator Treatment

Each treatment utilizes a very fine needle that is carefully and strategically injected into the target area. The entire injection process for each treatment usually lasts no longer than 10-30 minutes, depending on the number of areas being treated. Patients typically experience little to no pain, and topical anesthetics and other techniques are available to minimize discomfort. Our aesthetic injectors use NavaClick™ injection technology, which is specifically designed for neuromodulator injections and affords us extreme precision with a much smaller needle. The procedure is often so simple and quick, many patients elect to have their neuromodulator treatments performed during their lunch hour.

Neuromodulators Recovery & Results

With each of these neuromodulators, there is usually little to no downtime for the patient. Immediately before treatment, a topical anesthetic may be used to numb the injection site. Cold compresses are also used before and after treatment to help ensure comfort. In some cases, patients may experience temporary redness or swelling in the treatment area though these symptoms should quickly dissipate. Most of our patients return to work or their normal daily activities immediately after treatment. The results from these neuromodulators typically begin to be seen as early as 3-5 days and generally last 3-4 months, though Daxxify results can last longer. Results can be easily maintained and improved with follow-up treatments. Follow up treatments range from 2-4 times per year.

FAQs About Neuromodulators

During a consultation with Dr. Bucky or one of our aesthetic injectors, we will discuss your goals and options to help determine the best treatment for you. You may be a good candidate for BOTOX or related treatments if:

  • You would like to look younger and more refreshed
  • You wish to reduce fine lines and wrinkles
  • You want to prevent the development of future lines and wrinkles
  • You are seeking subtle, but noticeable results
  • You are interested in a non-surgical procedure
  • You do not want any downtime after treatment
  • You prefer temporary results with easy maintenance
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding

The cost of neuromodulator treatment depends on the strength of your facial muscles and on the areas treated to achieve the patient’s unique goals. We will discuss the cost of your personalized treatment plan during your consultation.

The effects of your neuromodulator treatment last for a few months. Most of our patients choose to come in for a follow-up treatment after 3-5 months.

Neuromodulators don’t actually remove wrinkles, nor does it work like dermal filler treatments that temporarily fill in wrinkles. Instead, neuromodulators temporarily stop the muscle contractions behind the facial expressions that cause wrinkles. For example, neuromodulators reduce the appearance of lines between the brows (glabellar lines) because it temporarily prevents you from furrowing your brow.

Yes, neuromodulators can be combined with other cosmetic procedures like dermal fillers or laser skin rejuvenation treatments for more comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

The best age is whenever you are ready! Some patients in their 20s find that early, preventative treatment is right for them, while others may opt to begin treatment when they see the formation of static facial lines following animation.

Absolutely. Neuromodulators are a popular cosmetic treatment for both men and women. Our male patients appreciate the natural-looking youthful appearance that they can achieve with BOTOX and other neuromodulators.

When administered by one of our trained specialists, neuromodulators do not make a person’s face appear “frozen.” When properly injected, neuromodulators such as BOTOX do not change the appearance of a person’s face—you will just look more youthful and refreshed.
