How is Fat Obtained for Breast Reconstruction with Fat Transfer?

bodyBe it large or small volume, I employ some degree of fat transfer for 100% of the breast reconstruction procedures I perform at my practice. In order to obtain this fat, I utilize liposuction on different areas of the body based on each patient’s unique build.

From Which Areas of the Body is Fat Obtained?

In short, I often use the entire body as a donor for fat transfer. If the patient has a little excess fat in a particular area, such as the the hips or the belly, this is generally a good starting place to target; however, in addition to this initial area, or should the patient not have a specific area of substantial excess fat to begin with, I will often take a little bit of fat from several different areas of the body. By doing so, we can typically avoid any indentations or irregularities that may occur from over-harvesting fat in one specific area.

What if the Patient Isn’t a Traditional Candidate for Liposuction?

Even patients without any noticeable fat buildups can achieve good breast reconstruction results thanks to our ability to remove fat from multiple areas of the body. When we take a little bit of fat from several different areas, the volume begins to add up without noticeable removal from one specific area. This can ultimately enable us to shape a better, more natural-looking breast.
